Become a Tutor 

Have you done well in a particular course or subject area?
Are you good at using and teaching effective study strategies?


Trinity Tutors are faculty-recommended, trained peer tutors whom the Dean of Students Office recommends to students requesting tutors in particular subjects or students seeking assistance with study skills.

We especially need tutors who are strong in biology, chemistry, economics, and math. Students also seek help in English, foreign languages, engineering, computer science, political science, and psychology. We also occasionally need peer tutors for other individual or specialized courses, including study skills.

If you are interested in tutoring in your major or in another area of particular strength, please pick up an application form from the Dean of Students office and return it to Dean Reuman:

Application due date: Friday, September 6, 2002 (to tutor this Fall and/or for the full academic year).

  • On Friday, September 13, 1:00-3:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, September 24, 5:00-7:00 there will be a tutor training workshop for all those who have been accepted as Trinity Tutors to give more information about learning styles, needs assessment, effective tutoring techniques, and resources available to you and to your tutees. To become a Trinity Tutor, attendance at this workshop is required.

Job Description

Position:
Trinity Tutors are faculty- and dean-recommended, trained peer tutors with expertise in a particular area and ability to work effectively with students on an individual basis.

Subject areas:
Tutors are particularly needed for traditionally difficult courses and must be able to model effective study skills. They are also occasionally needed to assist students who have missed work because of extended illness or who have difficulties with course work because English is a second language.

Responsibilities:

    • Participate in the Tutor Training Workshop.
    • Participate in case-study and professional development In-Service Training Workshops ( approximately 3 per semester) throughout the year.
    • Keep tutor log and complete paper work on time.

Time commitment:
Varies by subject area and demand; average 3 hours per week.

Compensation:
Tutors are paid $7.00-7.50 per hour, depending on training and experience.

Criteria for Selection

Qualifications:

  • Tutors must have earned a G.P.A. of at least a 3.0 (B-) on Trinity’s 4.0 scale in the subject area that they wish to tutor and must have completed at least two semesters of college work.
  • Tutors typically have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or above.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated mastery of material in subject area to be tutored,
  • Interest in helping students learn,
  • Ability to teach/coach effectively,
  • Evidence of effectively study habits,
  • Approachability and availability, and
  • Observation of due dates.
  • Related experience and knowledge of Trinity’s academic resources preferred.

Availability:
Students must have time to devote to training and tutoring (approximately 2-6 hours/week, depending upon number of students who need help in your area).

Application Procedure

Applications are available from Dean Reuman in the Dean of Students Office and are due as indicated on the application form.

Students whose applications are accepted will be invited to interview.

Notification of selection occurs at the end of each semester.
