Overview of the Health Professions Advising Committee (HPAC)
Trinity’s Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) provides advising and support for students and graduates applying for advanced study in the health professions.
A key function of HPAC is to provide the Committee Letter required or recommended by most medical, osteopathic, dental, veterinary and optometry schools as well as some schools representing other health care fields.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ALUMNI/AE APPLYING TO MEDICAL OR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL FOR FALL OF 2009:

Applicant Deadlines:
Pay careful attention to the deadline dates and requirements detailed below. If you miss a deadline or your Interfolio file is incomplete, the HPAC will not prepare a Committee Letter for you.

The Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) will present information on the materials you need to submit for your HPAC file by March 27, 2009.

- All materials must be in your Interfolio account by the above date

- Two letters MUST be from Trinity SCIENCE faculty.
- One letter MUST be from a NON-SCIENCE faculty.
- IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to check the status and content of your Interfolio account and to remind writers of your deadline. Writers must send recommendations directly to Interfolio.

- Personal Statement
- Attend the Writing Center Workshop (date TBA) on how to prepare your Personal Statement. You must bring a first draft of your statement to the session.
- When complete submit your personal statement to your Interfolio account.
- Autobiographical Profile
- The Guidelines can be found here:
- When complete, submit your autobiographical statement to your Interfolio account.
- Download two copies of the Health Professions Advisory Committee Letter of Evaluation form, sign and deliver to Kathy Mallinson (Clement 107, Science Commons).

On both copies of the form, indicate whether you wish the Committee Letter to be Confidential or Non-Confidential by signing your name and writing the date in the appropriate box.

Leave the "Name, Class Year and Professional School or Program" lines blank. Kathy Mallinson will type that information in the blanks.
- Return the signed and dated forms to Kathy Mallinson. These are the ONLY hard copy materials you will submit to Kathy Mallinson.

Monitor the status of your online Interfolio file. It is your responsibility to insure that all materials are submitted. Check often and carefully before the March 27, 2009 deadline.
Your HPAC file will be complete when you have submitted all materials to your Interfolio account by March 27, 2009 AND completed your interview with a member of HPAC by May 4, 2009.
Health Professions Test Information
- Start serious MCAT preparation for the 2009 test (www.aamc.org/students/mcat/start.htm ) if you are applying for fall 2010 admissions for medical school or osteopathic medical school. Select a test date as soon as possible to increase your chances of a preferred site. Typically schools begin extending invitations for interviews in August and admit candidates on a rolling admissions basis.

- Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT): Consult the website below for online date and deadline information:
- Optometry Admission Test (OAT): Consult the website below for registration information for the OAT. www.opted.org/info_oat.cfm
- Graduate Record Exam (GRE): Consult the website below for online registration for the General Test and for Subject Tests: http://gre.org.
- General Tests are computer-based and given year-round at test centers.
- Subject tests are given in October, March and June in the following disciplines: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Literature in English
- Veterinary College Admission Test (VCAT): Test is no longer administered.

Other tasks to complete before leaving campus in May
- Send thank you notes to your letter of recommendation writers.
- Research schools consulting official guides (available in Career Services, from Dr. Church, or to order from professional association web sites).
- Identify schools to which you will apply. Attend information session on: "Choosing a health profession schools to apply to" in March.
- Attend the “What You Need to Know to Submit Your AMCAS Application”. Presented by HPAC on April 30, 2009, 7pm in Science Commons.
May 4, 2009
- Interviews with HPAC members completed.
JUNE 2009
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2009
- Submit all secondary applications by the end of the month.
- Letters of Recommendation are sent to schools that have invited you to submit a secondary application. To do this, submit your recommendation requests to Interfolio ASAP
- Prepare for interviews.

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) The oldest and most complete of the professional medical related sites. It is a great resource to spend some time researching. Click student and applicant information for admissions information; includes a link to AMCAS and AMCAS-E, the electronic application to medical school.
American Medical Student Association (AMSA) The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), with a half-century history of medical student activism, is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States. Founded in 1950 to provide medical students a chance to participate in organized medicine, AMSA began under the auspices of the American Medical Association. Starting in 1960, the association refocused its energies on the problems of the medically underserved, inequities in our health-care system and related issues in medical education. Since 1968, AMSA has been a fully independent student organization.
