AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN AAUW
Selected Professions Group Fellowships
Offers funding to women from ethnic minority groups that have been historically underrepresented in designated fields (business administration, law, and medicine).
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be entering their final year of study in one of the above-listed fields in September. Must be a woman from an ethnic minority group. Deadline: mid-Dec. (except MBA); early Feb. for MBA grads only.
AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION
Summer Research Fellowships in Law and Social Science for Minority Undergraduate Students
The American Bar Foundation sponsors a program of summer research fellowships to interest minority undergraduate students in pursuing graduate studies in the social sciences. The summer program is designed to introduce students to the rewards and demands of a research-oriented career in the field of law and social science.
ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents including, but not limited to, persons who are African American, Mexican, Native American, or Puerto Rican. Must have completed the sophomore or junior year; G.P.A. of at least 3.0, a major in the social sciences or humanities. Deadline: completed applications, transcript and letters of recommendations are due no later than early March
ABA Leadership - Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund
The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund currently is expected to award $5,000 of financial assistance annually per student. An award made to an entering freshman may be renewable for each year, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during, his or her three years of law school. Although the recipient will need to apply for the scholarship in his or her second and third year, the expectation is that the scholarship will be renewed for all three years.
AMERICAN GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
AGI Minority Scholarships
Provides undergraduate and graduate scholarships for African, Hispanic, and Native Americans who are geoscience majors.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be graduating college senior, BA/BS holder, master's or doctoral candidate; funds must be used in the U.S. Deadline: early February.
AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
Louise Giles Minority Scholarship
Scholarships are offered to students of academic excellence and leadership who have a commitment to a career in librarianship.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen. Applicants must enter or be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program, but cannot have completed more than 12 semester hours towards a master's degree in library science prior to early June. Deadline: Early January.
THE AMERICAN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION (APSA)
Graduate Fellowships for Minority Students
The major purpose of the Fellowship Program is threefold:
1. To identify and aid prospective minority political science graduate students.
2. To encourage other institutions to provide financial assistance to these prospective students.
3. To contribute to the development of political science by recruiting persons who will bring greater diversity to the field.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must intend to pursue the requirements for a doctoral degree in a graduate department of political science (specialized programs for the M.A. or M.P.A. degree are excluded). Priority will be granted to persons about to enter graduate school. Deadline: Applications must be received prior to early December.
AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
Minority Fellowship Program in Psychology
Offers fellowships to ethnic minority students interested in obtaining a doctorate in psychology or neuroscience; provides training in neurosciences, clinical skills, and research.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; must be accepted and enrolled in a full-time doctoral program; must be a member of an ethnic minority group (including but not limited to African American, Hispanic American, Native American, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders). Deadline: mid-January.
ARENA STAGE
Allen Lee Hughes Fellows Program
Arena Stage's fellowship program offers an exciting opportunity for people of color who are in the early stages of their theater careers. The program offers personalized training in Arts in Education, Business Management/Personnel, Casting/Production, Communications/PR, Costume Design, Development/Fundraising, Directing, Literary Management/Dramaturgy and many other aspects of theater management. Fellowships are full-time positions that require a seasonal commitment of 40-44 weeks (August through June). Starting dates will be determined by departmental and production considerations. Arena Stage will
provide a stipend of up to $10,000 per Fellow. Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the Fellow.
ELIGIBILITY: Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree, art-related experience, and a serious interest in theater. DEADLINE: Usually set for early April.
ASIAN CULTURAL COUNCIL
Asian Cultural Council Fellowships
Supports cultural exchange in the visual and performing arts between the United States and the countries of Asia, and has been affiliated with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund since 1991. Fellowships to individuals constitute the central feature of the ACC's grant program, the emphasis being awards to artists, scholars, and specialists from Asia for research, study, and creative work in the United States. Some grants are also made to Americans pursuing similar activities in Asia and to educational and cultural institutions engaged in projects of special significance to Asian-American exchange. In addition, the Council awards a small number of grants in support of regional cultural exchange within East and Southeast Asia.
ELIGIBILITY: No restriction placed on academic level of applicant; recipients selected on the basis of the quality of proposal. Deadline: Completed application must be submitted at least six months prior to planned project implementation. Deadline: early February and early August.

CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS INSTITUTE, INC.
Graduate Fellowship Program
Provides Hispanic students enrolled in graduate public policy program or other policy-related fields the chance to participate in the making of federal policy.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must currently be enrolled in an accredited university and be working toward a graduate degree in public policy. Must be a U.S. citizen - including Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands - or a legal permanent resident of the U.S. or its territories and must be fluent in English. Deadline: early April
CONSORTIUM FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN MANAGEMENT
Minority MBA Fellowships
Provides fellowship support to talented African, Hispanic, and Native Americans enrolled in MBA programs at member universities of the Consortium which includes Indiana University, The University of Michigan, New York University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Rochester, University of Southern California, The University of Texas at Austin, Washington University in St. Louis, and University of Wisconsin.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a member of an ethnic minority group; must attend or plan to attend a consortium-affiliated university in an MBA program. Deadline: early February.
THE FORD FOUNDATION
Pre-Doctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities Awards made to African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders for study in research-based doctoral programs in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and biological sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs comprised of two or more eligible disciplines.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Deadlines: early November for predoctoral & dissertation fellowships; early January for postdoctoral fellowships.
ILLINOIS CONSORTIUM FOR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM
Illinois Minority Graduate Incentive Program
Provides financial assistance to African American, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans who wish to pursue graduate or professional degrees at Illinois institutions and who intend to seek faculty or staff positions at Illinois colleges or universities upon completion of their studies.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a member of an ethnic minority group; must attend an Illinois institution and plan to work at one after graduation. Deadline: mid-February.
NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
Women's and Ethnic Minority Enhancement Programs Post-Graduate Scholarships
Designed to support qualified ethnic minority and women candidates in intercollegiate athletics to increase the pool of and opportunities for women and ethnic minorities in this area.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen; must be a woman or a member of an ethnic minority group; must be entering first term of post-graduate studies in a sports administration or related program at an NCAA member institution. Deadline: mid-February.
NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR GRADUATE DEGREES FOR MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING, INC.
Graduate Minority GEM Fellowships
Offers graduate fellowships in engineering and the natural sciences to African, Hispanic, and Native Americans.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen; must be an undergraduate junior, a graduating senior, or a BA/BS holder. Deadline: early December
NATIONAL PHYSICAL SCIENCE CONSORTIUM FOR MINORITIES AND WOMEN
Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women in the Physical Sciences
The National Physical Science Consortium offers a unique six (6) year doctoral fellowship program in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, material science, mathematical sciences, physics, and subdisciplines at a university which is part of the consortium.
ELIGIBILITY: Graduates in above fields of study. Also, must be a U.S. citizen accepted for study at one of the member universities of the Consortium, must have research experience at a university and in industry, high academic standing and GRE scores. Request application materials in early fall. Deadline: completed applications are due mid-November.
PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (PPIA)
Fellowship Program: The Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program seeks to recruit and empower a new generation of culturally diverse and dedicated public servants. PPIA targets that segment of the U.S. population that will constitute the majority of new workers hired in the new millennium -- people of color. By offering the analytical, quantitative, linguistic, and communications skills needed for the 21st Century, PPIA helps its fellows to launch their careers in public service. Graduate Fellowships support Master's degrees in public policy and international affairs in 29 U.S. graduate schools. The PPIA Fellowship Program provides $15,000 in funding over the two-year study period. The participating schools contribute a minimum of $15,000 or its equivalent in grants, tuition waivers, and assistantships.
RONALD E. MCNAIR POST BACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM
This federally funded program provides grants to selected institutions for the purpose of preparing eligible undergraduates to pursue a doctoral degree. Program is open to first-generation, low-income college students, minorities, women, or students who are otherwise underrepresented at the doctoral level in chemical, civil or surveying engineering and physics.
ELIGIBILITY: Must have completed the junior year by the beginning of the research period; G.P.A. of 3.2; be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. citizen. Deadline: early May.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
Newhouse School of Public Communications
Offers a master's level combination fellowship and internship program in newspaper journalism for members of under-represented groups. Includes free tuition for sixteen months and a monthly stipend.
ELIGIBILITY: Be a U.S. citizen and a member of an underrepresented group. Open to students who have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. but have not majored in journalism on the undergraduate level. Must have taken the GRE prior to mid January. Deadline: February 15, but application materials should be requested in the fall.
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Graduate Fellowship Program
Designed to increase the number of U.S. citizens educated in disciplines of science and engineering by awarding three types of fellowships to recent outstanding undergraduates: National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships; The Navy's Office of Naval Research Graduate Fellowship Program; and the Air Force Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program. (Ten percent of the fellowships will be awarded to members of ethnic minority groups).
