Networking Events (Round Table Lunches, Dinners, Panels & Receptions)

Networking events not only help you gain "professional schmoozing" skills, but they also provide a better understanding of the expectations and the day-to-day realities of your prospective career choices.  Just as important as the information you will learn, is the opportunity you will have to expand your own professional network in a risk-free setting.

Remember, every person you meet has his/her own network so talk to as many people as you can.  Don’t worry if they are not in the field you are currently interested in. You never know who they can introduce you to - perhaps their former roommate or best friend would be an ideal contact for you.

If you are undecided about what you want to do after graduation, attend as many of these sessions as you can and use these opportunities to ask people what they do.  You may learn about a career field that might be just right for you, or be able to make an informed decision to cross some career fields off your list entirely.

Get in the habit of asking for business cards.

To ensure that the conversation continues after the event, ask if they would be willing to critique your resume.  (Make sure your resume has already been reviewed by a Career Advisor –never give an alum your first draft!)  Prompt, professional, follow up will only enhance the great impression you made during the event.

While the majority of networking events occur on campus, Careers Services, in partnership with Area Alumni Clubs, also hosts annual networking events in Boston, New York and Washington, DC.
