MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN
FOR WINDOWS
1) Introduction
Mcafee VirusScan is a program that protects your computer from viruses. It is
vital to have an anti-virus program installed on your computer, as it is
relatively easy to get infected with a computer virus. By the time you
realize you've been infected, you may have already lost files you consider
important or irreplaceable. You may have also infected your friends and family. The
best way to avoid getting infected is to use an anti-virus program such as this
one, which detects viruses before they have a chance to damage your computer. It
is equally important to update this software at least weekly to recognize new
viruses.
This software is licensed to Trinity College. We encourage all students to install this software and keep it updated while you are a Trinity student. When you leave Trinity you will be expected to remove this software from your computer.
Students can get a copy of the software from the network.
Students who live
off-campus will need to setup a
VPN connection first in order
to get access to the campus network.
Faculty and staff should already have VirusScan on their office computers. If
you need assistance with your version
on your office computer, please call the Help Desk at x2100.
Students with infected computers than
cannot get on the campus network may check out a CD for 2 hours use to
install the software. Please see the Help Desk for more information.
2) Installation
Before you begin, you must uninstall any virus scanning software that currently
exists on your computer. If you do not, VirusScan may conflict with this software
and your computer may not function properly. From the Start menu, select
Settings, then Control Panel. Select Add or Remove Programs
and remove any listed virus protection programs. Restart your computer after
removing the old virus software.
If you have a CD, please
double-click on the program called Setup to install
the software on your computer. Skip to section 3, Scanning Your Computer.
The installer is
located in on the Bantam file server. To get to the software:
1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon, then select "Map Network Drive".
2. Select a drive letter to link to the Bantam share area (ex.,
"M:").
3. In the "Path:" (or "Folder:") box, enter
\\zep\bantam.
4. Login with your Trinity username and password.
5. Select the Virus Software directory: \\zep\bantam\VirusSoftware.
***IF YOU HAVE A VIRUS
NOW***
The Virus Fixes folder contains numerous utilities to remove the more common
varieties found on campus. Try to remove the virus with these utilities before
installing McAfee.
6. If you currently have no viruses and are ready to install, open the folder
called VirusScan, and double-click on the program called Setup. This will
install the software on your computer.
3) Scanning Your Computer
In order to detect the latest viruses, VirusScan needs to be updated with the
latest virus definitions. It is recommended that you update your virus definitions
weekly, if not more often.
If you don't update them, then you will not be protected against newer viruses,
and your computer will become infected, even with the VirusScan software on it. You can set up
VirusScan to automatically download
and install the latest definitions.
| NOTE: You must get the latest definitions now immediately,
to protect your computer completely. |
To
update your virus definition files manually, right-click on the V-Shield icon
in the bottom
right-hand corner of your screen. Select "Update Now". It will then attempt to
update your files.

Once updating is complete, right-click on the
V-Shield icon
again. This
time, select "On-Demand Scan". This will open up the Scan Properties window
shown below.

Click on "Scan Now" to start scanning.
Any detected viruses will be listed at the bottom of the window with a
status that it has been cleaned, deleted, or unable to clean/delete.

3) Protecting Your Computer in the Future
For
convenience, you can set VirusScan to automatically
install the latest definitions on a regular basis.
Right-click
on the V-Shield icon
and select "VirusScan Console".

Right-click on the
"AutoUpdate" and then select "Properties". On the next screen, select
"Schedule" from the buttons on the right-hand side. It should look something like this.

Select Run Weekly to have VirusScan update itself every week. Note:
your computer must be turned on and must be on the network at the scheduled time
before the update can take place. To check the date of your virus definitions,
from the VirusScan console, select "About" from the Help menu. If the date
is not from within the past week, run the "update now" option
immediately. More information about
keeping your computer secure can be found online at
