Looking to Buy a Computer?

We know that choosing a computer can sometimes be overwhelming. There are many options including buying from a reputable manufacturer, purchasing a secondhand machine, building one yourself, or hoping a higher power intervenes. Because of the unknowns involved, building your own computer or dealing with the hassles of a used machine is not recommended unless you are a VERY computer savvy individual.

The Computing Center understands that not everyone is a computer expert and thus we have come up with a set of specifications that we recommend you adhere to when purchasing a new computer. They are printed on a handy card that you can take with you when shopping for a new machine. It was sent out with the first "Starting Out" packet that is mailed to all First Year students. (If you did not receive the mailing or lost the information, it is available below under the section below titled "Documents Mailed to Students".) We believe that a computer which meets these "Recommended Configurations" will last an entire 4 year tenure at Trinity.

We do not require that you purchase a specific model or style of computer, nor do we require you buy from a specific manufacturer. However, we do recommend that you buy from a well known major producer and avoid the "deep discount" off-brand makes. We also strongly urge you to purchase a locking mechanism for your laptop. More information is available on our Securing Your Laptop Page.

Note: With the rapid turnover of new technologies, particularly with computer hardware, it is suggested that students hold off purchasing their computer until the summer months, to reap the most benefits on their purchase. Most major computer companies lower their prices on a regular basis, sometimes within a period of weeks. It is important, however, to provide enough time to become familiar with the computer and to make sure it is in working order before arriving to campus.
