Student Technology Assistant Program

The Student Technology Assistant (STA) program at Trinity College is a collaborative initiative of Academic Computing and the Blume Language and Culture Learning Center to enhance instructional technology support on campus. The program’s goal is to facilitate the use of instructional technology on campus in order to empower faculty with the means to effectively integrate instructional technology into their practice as well as to develop projects that enhance the overall teaching and learning mission of the College. At the same time, the STA program provides Trinity students with a valuable opportunity to work in a professional setting while gaining practical and professional experience using a range of advanced technologies for web design, multimedia development, and online instruction in general.

Working with faculty to support instruction
The Student Technology Assistant (STA) program is designed to assist faculty in their use of instructional technology for teaching purposes, such as troubleshooting Blackboard issues, assisting with the use of specific software packages, or answering questions about the resources available in Academic Computing and the Blume Center. Consisting of a group of motivated and well-trained students working together with instructional technology specialists, the STA program provides assistance to faculty members in a variety of ways:

  • During specific hours (e.g., “tech clinic”) to assist faculty with instructional technology issues: Blackboard features, Wimba tools, digitizing software, etc.
  • Facilitating face-to-face and online troubleshooting (e.g., via Instant Messaging) of instructional applications and handling academic support calls
  • Developing documentation for various instructional technology resources (e.g., via a Wiki and FAQ web sites)

Working with faculty to enhance instruction
The STA program also works with faculty members to develop new instructional materials during the academic year and over the summer. Although these projects may range in scope and complexity, they usually entail the use of advanced instructional technology to tackle a particular instructional problem. Projects are selected based on relevance and availability of resources.
Each project team consists of one or more Student Technology Assistants, a faculty member and an instructional technology specialist from Academic Computing or the Blume Center. Additional staff from the library and other support organizations may also be consulted.

Student Technology Assistants work closely with the faculty member on the development of the project, with faculty providing ongoing feedback throughout the entire process. Academic Computing and the Blume Center will provide any training or materials necessary to complete the project, monitor progress, and facilitate communication.
