It is my pleasure to inform the campus community that Francisco Ortiz has accepted the appointment as Director of Campus Safety and will begin on August 27, 2012. Mr. Ortiz is currently Director of Security Operations at Yale University where he oversees a department of more than 100 staff who provide security and safety services to Yale College and the graduate and professional schools. Prior to Yale, Mr. Ortiz served for 30 years in the New Haven Police Department and as the Chief of Police from 2003 until 2008.
Mr. Ortiz holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of New Haven. He has an exemplary record of leadership in civic and professional associations and served as a Senior Fellow at the Yale Child Study Center where he participated in studies on the psychological effects of violence on children. In 1994 he received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his work with the New Haven community and in 2010 the Outstanding Achievement Award from the New Haven Public Schools.
Our search committee received over 175 applications and Mr. Ortiz emerged as the clear favorite to lead Trinity as we continue to develop and improve our campus safety programs.
I would like to thank publicly Consuelo Pedro ’15; Dante Ambrogio ’13; Timothy Curran, professor of chemistry; Melanie Stein, academic associate dean and professor of mathematics; Paul Mutone, vice president of finance and operations; Martha Burke O’Brien, director of the Health Center; and Campus Safety administrators and officers Jorge Lugo, David Norris, James Perrotti, and Michael Woods for their work on the search committee.
I also want to extend special thanks to James Perrotti who has served so ably as Interim Director of Campus Safety for the past four months. Perrotti will continue to work through the month to help Mr. Ortiz with the transition to Trinity and the myriad duties that come with the opening of school and Orientation.
I hope all of you will join me in welcoming Cisco Ortiz to Trinity.
