Trinity College Class of 2022 Takes Shape Through Early Decision

‘Strongest Academic Profile of Any in Recent History’

Hartford, Connecticut, February 19, 2018—Approximately 310 students who applied to Trinity College through Early Decision (ED) are the first members of the Class of 2022. This number includes students who applied in two rounds of ED, the second group of which received their admission notices this month.

Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success Angel B. Pérez said that the Class of 2022 is shaping up to be one of the strongest in recent history, with a 19-percent increase in students at the very top of the academic rating scale and 57 percent fewer students at the bottom of that scale, compared to last year.

“I continue to be inspired by the students who are coming to Trinity through our Early Decision program,” Perez said. “This year’s ED class has the strongest academic profile of any in recent history, and it includes the highest number of first-generation and international students. In addition, their personal character, co-curricular involvement, and stories of achievement will enhance this community in extraordinary ways.”

Fifteen percent of the ED admits are first-generation college students, and 10 percent are international students. Of the admitted students, 42 percent are women and 58 percent are men. American students of color, including multi-ethnic students, are 20 percent of the ED admits. Fifty-one percent are from outside New England. To a large extent, the demographics of the group reflect both the shifting demographics of the country and the college’s evolving recruitment strategies in anticipation of those shifts—with an increasingly diverse population of new high school students nationally, for instance, as well as a significant drop in the number of new high school graduates in New England expected over the next decade.

Trinity plans to disburse approximately $6.4 million in financial aid to the students admitted through ED. Included among them are 20 Posse Scholars, 153 varsity athletes, and students from many scholarship partner programs. The Class of 2022 also includes previously admitted students who reconfirmed their commitment to Trinity after taking a year of deferral.

ED applicants, who have named Trinity as their first-choice college and affirm their commitment to attend if admitted, apply to Trinity in two rounds. The ED1 deadline was November 15, 2017, and the ED2 deadline was January 1, 2018. Regular decision applicants also had a deadline of January 1, 2018, and will receive notification of Trinity’s admission decision in late March.
