Background:

On Tuesday, August 28, 1866 – 150 years ago – the newly constructed Watkinson Library opened in elegant oak-paneled rooms and alcoves in the Wadsworth Atheneum, with 12,000 volumes on the shelves. It grew 10 times larger over the next eight decades, and in 1952 it was given to Trinity College. Since it came to campus, the Watkinson has acted as a lodestone for gifts of important collections and single works of utmost rarity, provided the raw materials for advanced research, and mounted nearly 400 exhibitions over 60 years – all curated by students, faculty, staff, and others.
