Leslie Desmangles to Discuss the Jewish Diaspora in the Caribbean

Trinity College Professor to Deliver the Shirley G. Wassong Memorial Lecture

 What: Leslie Desmangles, Trinity College professor of religion and international studies, will deliver the Shirley G. Wassong Memorial Lecture in European and American Art, Culture, and History. Desmangles will discuss the hardships endured by early Jewish settlers in the Caribbean and how they maintained their culture and preserved their religious traditions in the Caribbean diaspora. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will immediately follow in the Dangremond Family Commons in Hallden Hall.

Background: Desmangles is an expert on African and Caribbean religions, including Vodou, Rastafarianism, and Islam. Among many publications, he has authored The Faces of the Gods: Vodou and Roman Catholicism in Haiti and served as associate editor for the Encyclopedia of African and American Religions, each of which won a Choice book award. Desmangles is a co-founder of the Haitian Studies Association and founder of the Journal of Haitian Studies, and has been featured in American, Canadian, and British radio and television programs. 

The Shirley G. Wassong Memorial Lecture Fund, which supports an annual lecture on the themes of European and American Art, Culture, and History, was established in 1996 in loving memory of Mrs. Wassong by friends, family, and her husband, Joseph F. Wassong, Jr., Trinity Class of 1959. The annual lecture features members of Trinity’s faculty and guest scholars in alternating years. The lecturers are from various academic disciplines, and their topics range from antiquity to the present day. This year’s event marks the 19th Wassong Memorial Lecture.
