Athletics Community Weekend Welcomes Fans to Games, Reception, and Raffle Jan. 29-31

Community Invited to Support the Bantams in Ice Hockey, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, and Squash

Hartford, Connecticut, January 28, 2016 – The Trinity College Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and Trinity's Office of Community Relations will be sponsoring an Athletics Community Weekend in the Ferris Athletic Center and the Koeppel Community Sports Center from January 29 to 31.  Community groups and fans from the surrounding neighborhoods, the city of Hartford, and beyond will be the College's special guests at all Trinity home athletic contests on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a reception and raffle drawing taking place on Sunday, January 31, between 5 and 7 p.m. in the Koeppel Center on New Britain Avenue.

"The goal of the Community Weekend is to continue to build a strong relationship between Trinity College, particularly its athletes, and the Hartford community," said Kaitlin Lewis '17, a women's basketball junior and SAAC member.  "This event will hopefully grow the fan base of Bantam sports teams and foster a meaningful relationship between Trinity student-athletes and members of the city in which they live in."

Trinity College Community Relations Manager Julia Rivera added, "The Athletics Community Weekend is about making our neighbors feel welcome and fostering a spirit of community beyond our campus in the city of Hartford. We hope that this family-friendly weekend will encourage community members to support Trinity sports and attend future athletic competitions and events on campus. "

At each event (listed below) SAAC reps will be handing out free raffle tickets to members of the Hartford community who attend the games.  At the reception on Sunday the winning raffle tickets will be selected and prizes including free swim lessons and assorted athletic clothing from teams including the swim, track and field, men’s soccer, men’s lacrosse and women’s basketball teams will be given out.

"As a student-athlete myself I think this event is a great idea," continued Lewis.  "I think that athletics is one of the best ways to bring people together and this event will be a good way to break down some barriers that may exist between the Trinity students and the people of Hartford.  Hopefully it will encourage the Hartford community to attend future games, which would help to fill up the stands and create a great atmosphere for the Trinity student-athletes."
