Trinity College Announces New V.P. of Enrollment and Student Success

Angel B. Pérez Comes to Trinity from Pitzer College
HARTFORD, Conn., November 24, 2014 – Trinity College President Joanne Berger-Sweeney has announced the appointment of Angel B. Pérez as the College’s new vice president of enrollment and student success. In this senior-level position reporting to the president, Pérez will focus on assuring that Trinity expands its geographic reach, enrolls a diverse and academically talented student body, and strategizes around issues of retention and student success. Pérez comes to Trinity from Pitzer College in Claremont, California, where he currently serves as vice president and dean of admission and financial aid.

Pérez’s appointment follows the announcement last summer of the retirement of Larry Dow '73, Trinity’s current dean of admissions and financial aid. In making the announcement of Pérez’s appointment, President Berger-Sweeney said, “As you know, identifying the right person to lead Trinity’s admissions efforts has been one of my highest priorities. We sought to find someone who brought a deep understanding of the value of interdisciplinary liberal arts education and of an engaged student body. Angel Pérez immediately stood out as someone who possessed these characteristics and who also brought an appealing personal warmth. He will be an outstanding addition to Trinity’s leadership, and I look forward to welcoming him to Hartford.”

Pérez, who will join Trinity in June, has spent the last eight years at Pitzer College, one of the seven highly selective Claremont Colleges. At Pitzer, he led an 18-member team, and under his leadership, Pitzer received the highest number of applications, the highest yield, the highest enrollment of first-generation students, and the lowest admit rate in its history. He also formed strong working partnerships with the offices of student affairs, academic affairs, international programs, athletics, and institutional research—a collaborative quality highly valued by the Trinity search team.

“I'm ecstatic about joining Trinity at this exciting point in its history,” said Pérez. “After several visits to campus and many conversations with President Berger-Sweeney, I knew Trinity was the perfect fit for me. The opportunity to lead a division that is responsible for not just admitting students, but also strategizing around their success on campus, is a dream. It’s a tribute to President Berger-Sweeney’s forward-thinking agenda for Trinity's future and I look forward to working with the entire community to cultivate entering classes and fully support the next generation of Trinity students.”

Prior to joining Pitzer in 2007, Pérez was associate dean of admission and financial aid at Claremont McKenna College, also within the Claremont Colleges, where he served since 2004. He also served as a college counselor and head of a community-based organization in New York City, helping first-generation students apply to college. Pérez earned a B.S. from Skidmore College, an M.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D., expected this year, from Claremont Graduate University. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, among other distinctions, and is the author of numerous articles.
