Frequently Asked Questions:
Note: More specific program information can be found by clicking on the appropriate site link under PROGRAMS.
What kind of clothes should we bring? We advise you to bring casual, comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Layering is key and a sweater, wrap or blazer for evenings is advisable and also as air conditioning can be cool in the classes and restaurants.
Do the hotels provide a laundry service? Some hotels offer a dry cleaning or wash and fold service for a fee. Most of our program sites are located within walking distance to a laundry service.
Do we need converters/plug adapters? Yes, you will need both for 220 voltage. They can be found at most hardware and software stores in North America.
Can the hotel and restaurants accommodate dietary restrictions? Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all meals will adhere to your dietary restrictions but our staff do their very best to accommodate these situations. The hotels and restaurants are happy to provide salad or fresh vegetables in lieu of pasta, bread and meat etc. Your program coordinator will be alerted to your restriction prior to the program but we would advise you to please be responsible for reminding restaurants and staff of your restrictions and talk to your doctor prior to the trip about your options.
Are there porters at the hotels? Porters are not available at all hotels. Therefore, we advise you to travel light and do not pack more than you can comfortably carry on your own.
How big are the rooms? The rooms in Italy tend to be smaller by North American standards especially in Venice and where space in historic city centers is restricted.
How do I call Italy? From the U.S. you must dial the international access code for Europe (011) plus the country code for Italy (39) plus the local number you are trying to reach. For example to dial the hotel in Rome: 011-39-06-631-967.
What if I/we want to stay additional nights at the hotel? Trinity College is unable to make reservations beyond the dates of the program. Please contact the hotel directly to make arrangements pre and post program.
How much money should we bring with us? We advise you to bring between 150 and 300 Euros for incidentals such as taking a taxi to the hotel from the airport in case of delays etc. Most places now except Visa and Mastercard, however, airports will charge fees for tendering cash/euros and your bank may offer a more favorable exchange. ATM's are now available in most regions 24 hours a day and within close walking distance to our program hotels. Please check with your bank regarding compatability and fees.
What will the weather be like? Weather varies according to the season and region but generally Italy favors a milder climate much like California. During the day temperatures can rise into the high 70’s and 80’s. Although temperatures in March and October will be in a more temperate range. Be prepared for occasional small showers and wind farther North. It can cool off pretty quickly after sun down so it is advisable to pack a light jacket or wrap.
How do I make calls from the hotels in Italy? If you do not have a calling card trhough your U.S. or Canadian telephone service provider we suggest purchasing an international calling card once onsite in the local tobacconist shops. Starting at around 5 euros, these cards offer much more favorable rates than calling directly from the hotel.

What is the level of walking/exercise? Trinity does not offer ‘hiking’ on our programs as we take the train, bus or boat to most of our destinations. That being said, some of the daily excursions to neighboring cities and small towns may include walking for up to 20 minutes and include a bit of standing. Be prepared for uneven and narrow cobble stone streets in historic city centers as well as some pedestrian traffic.
Will I have access to the internet? Can I bring my laptop?
We strongly advise you to take advantage of the local internet cafes. Some of the hotels offer internet service for a small fee but local internet cafes, generally within close walking distance to the hotel, provide reasonable rates. While there are internet connections at most hotels, we do not recommend that you bring your personal laptop as it presents a hassle in extra baggage, utilities and security. |
