Course Development Committee

May 8, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing as chair of the ad hoc committee charged with evaluating proposals for the first group of edX courses to be offered by the College. The committee was pleased with both the number (ten) and quality of the proposals, especially in light of the relatively short period between publication of the call for proposals and deadline for submission. In making our choice we sought to balance a number of factors, including likely appeal of the course topic, suitability for a MOOC, technical feasibility and intended audience, as well as considerations of divisional representation.

I am pleased to announce that the following five proposals have been chosen for development in the first round:

  • Kathleen Archer, "Scientific Teaching in Undergraduate Biology"
  • Henry DePhillips, "Science in Art: The Chemistry of Art Materials and Conservation"
  • Dan Lloyd, "Five Great Ideas in Phenomenology"
  • Kevin McMahon, "Shaping the Supreme Court: Presidents and the Politics of Law"
  • Ralph Morelli, "Mobile Computing with App Inventor (CS Principles)" - Part 1
The committee would also like to remind you that during the 2015-16 academic year there will be a second round of course developments. We expect a Call for Proposals to be published early next fall. Should you have any questions regarding edX or are considering submitting a course proposal, please feel free to contact any members of the committee.
