Study Away: Trinity-in-Santiago! 2009-2010
In Santiago, students are fully immersed in Chilean culture through classes taught in Spanish at the Universidad of Chile and/or the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Students also have the opportunity to participate in internships in local organizations and institutions. They live with Chilean families, which further allows them to integrate into the local culture and perfect their Spanish language skills. Opportunities to engage in community service also exist.
Participants will learn about the politics, rich history, arts, and literature of contemporary Chile and experience human right activism in action. The program includes an academic excursions in and around Santiago. The country’s turbulent history and breathtaking location make this an extraordinary place to experience and learn. Weekend field trips are offered to nearby national parks including a long weekend in eco-tourism center, Pucón, with optional hiking, rafting, and outdoor activities.
The program is offered both in the fall and spring semesters.

The City
The fifth largest city in South America, Santiago combines a pleasant mixture of the colonial and the modern. Santiago stands at an elevation of 2,500 feet in a wide plain about 60 miles equidistant from the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean and is bisected by the Mapocho River that meanders from east to west. More than a third of the residents of Chile live in this capital of 5 million, which dominates the political, economic and cultural life of the country. The city is a lively cosmopolitan center with many museums, opera houses, theatres, concert halls and restaurants. In addition, the city has many parks and offers stunning views of the nearby mountains.
The Universities:
The Universidad de Chile, founded in 1842, is the premier national university of Chile and one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the Americas. The university comprises 13 faculties, three interdisciplinary institutes, and three national centers. It is the key research institution in the country, with projects in all areas of academic inquiry and modern library and telecommunication facilities. Students can choose from a broad range of academic course offerings in all disciplines and from a variety of interdisciplinary studies. Given its stature in Chilean higher education, the university has also attracted a significant number of foreign students from all over the world.
The Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC) is one of the premier universities of South America. It offers a broad curriculum. The main campus is located in downtown Santiago, with four branches spread throughout the city. The university’s academic strengths include: economics, political science, history, education, biological sciences, chemistry, humanities, social sciences, political science,international studies, computer science, and psychology.
Program prerequisites
The program is open to students with a strong grade-point average (2.75 or higher) and a solid proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish (the equivalent of 6 semesters of college-level Spanish). Students will be interviewed by associated faculty members to determine their language level. Those students accepted to the program who require further language training will receive assistance in selecting an appropriate language program that will help them meet the requirements. The program is an ideal environment for students to examine Latin America Studies and Human Rights.

Application Information
All Trinity students who wish to study away are required to submit a Request for Approval to Study Away by the first week of December of the academic year prior to study. Upon approval, students must then submit a program application which is available from the Office of International Programs in 66 Vernon Street. Once accepted, all students will receive a program handbook that includes details on visas, finances, health issues, and other relevant information.

Program Highlights
· Students have the unique opportunity to study and examine up close the devastating effects of the Pinochet regime on an entire nation, through meetings with former political prisoners and internships with organizations helping those affected.
· Through full immersion, students are able to polish and perfect their Spanish language skills.
