Searching for Ripples in Spacetime

Dr. Eric Myers
Vassar College

Gravity waves are predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity.  Their detection would be an important confirmation of the dynamics of gravitation.  Gravity waves also offer the prospect of astronomical observation of the universe in a totally new spectrum.  I will discuss the general properties of gravity waves, and I will describe current efforts to detect these ripples in spacetime using LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravity wave Observatory.
