Trinity College’s Humanities
Gateway Program engages outstanding students in a comprehensive examination
of European cultures through integrated interdisciplinary study of their
histories, literatures, and religious and philosophical ideas, from classical
antiquity to the present. The program concentrates on forces that have shaped
European cultures at the same time that it traces the political and
intellectual changes that occurred through these periods.
By exploring the complex interplay of past and present, the
Humanities Gateway Program helps students attain a deeper understanding of our
age and its place in the larger sweep of historical development. The program builds
upon the premise that the skills most highly valued in students who study the
liberal arts – their strong writing skills and facility for verbal
communication, as well as their capacity to think critically and synthesize
complex ideas – are best developed from the outset of a student’s career, and
in small seminar settings that encourage engagement with texts and traditions
that grapple with defining facets of human experience.
