Transfer of Credit for Summer Courses Taken at Other Institutions

Each year, a number of Trinity College students take courses over the summer at other colleges and universities. If you think you may be taking courses this summer and wish to receive transfer credit, you should obtain an "Application for Transfer Credit" at the Office of the Registrar.  The procedure for applying for transfer credit for non-Trinity courses involves several steps, so it is important to give yourself adequate time to complete these steps and to have the "Application for Transfer Credit" processed .  You are expected to receive approval for your courses prior to your taking them this summer. You should have two or three courses preapproved; that way, if your desired course is not available, you will have a backup course for which you may register.

You can not receive instant approval of courses over the phone. If you telephone us during summer break to ask whether a certain course is acceptable for credit, we will not be able to grant you instant approval.  Approval is granted in writing only, based upon the Registrar's review of your "Application for Transfer Credit" and course descriptions.

You are reminded that only liberal arts and sciences courses are acceptable for transfer credit at Trinity. The specific regulations governing the transfer of credit to Trinity are outlined on pages 70 - 76 of the 2000-2001 Trinity College Student Handbook.  Complete information can also be found on our Web pages at www.trincoll.edu/depts/registra/transfer/.

IMPORTANT: Policy Concerning Community Colleges and Other Two-Year Institutions

A policy regarding transfer credit from community colleges and other two-year institutions has been established by the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty:

  • Once students have accumulated 18 course credits toward the Trinity degree, they may not take courses at community colleges or other two-year institutions for credit at the College.

The Faculty Curriculum Committee has ruled that no exceptions may be made to this policy.
