The Graduate Studies Program offers counseling to its students, both in matters relating to academic pursuits and to more individual concerns. In keeping with its liberal arts focus, Trinity College attempts to relate the academic interests of students to their individual, vocational, and personal requirements. Upon acceptance as a Master's degree candidate, each graduate student is assigned a faculty adviser, who assists in the planning of the academic program. In addition, Denise Best, Director of Graduate Studies, (860) 297-2150 and Marilyn Murphy, The Graduate Program Manager, (860) 297-2150 are available for consultation throughout the year.
Academic Computing (Graduate)
Graduate Studies students are required to take advantage of a Trinity College e-mail account, which is available at no cost. Admission to the Graduate Studies Program entitles students to electronic access to inter-College information on special events, announcements, opportunities, and postings. A Trinity account is also often required for many graduate classes where “Blackboard” is used by faculty to convey essential course information, required assignments, and to communicate with all enrolled students.
In general, teaching and learning at Trinity College are supported by state-of-the-art communication and computing services. This information is provided on the Computing Center’s Web site, which is continually updated.
Most of the College’s shared academic computing facilities are located in the Library and Information Technology Center (LITC) at the center of campus. In LITC’s shared facilities, you will find Macintosh and PC-compatible computers equipped with word processing, spreadsheet, and statistical analysis packages and other resources. In addition, the College owns and operates a collection of Sun UNIX workstations located in the Mathematics, Computing, and Engineering Center (MCEC). These machines are used for many purposes, including programming, statistical analysis, and graphics.
The Student Help Desk is located on the B floor of LITC at the bottom of the grand staircase and provides both application and network support for the student body.
All College computers are connected to a high-speed campus-wide network. The campus network is, in turn, connected to the Internet. Through our network, campus users can surf the Web, move files, send mail, or initiate logons to thousands of hosts all over the world. Wireless access also exists on campus to give students with laptops anywhere/anytime connectivity.
One of the most important network hosts for Trinity’s users is the Library’s on-line card catalog, which we share with Wesleyan University and Connecticut College. The Trinity Library also provides access to commercial bibliographic services via the network, including full-text databases. The network also provides access to dozens of programs that are needed for classwork. Many specialized programs are provided on-line. General-purpose tools are also available, such as desktop electronic mail and Blackboard, an on-line course management system used by some faculty to post class materials, hold on-line discussions, conduct electronic exchange of documents, and many other features via the web.
Career Services
Members of the Career Services Office are available for individual career advising and assistance in the preparation of résumés and job search strategies. In addition, the Office offers extensive on-line and hard-copy resources for use in researching careers and employment.
Counseling Center
The Counseling Center Director, Dr. Randolph Lee, and the Assistant Director, Dr. Carmen Santos, are licensed psychologists with training and experience in dealing with emotional problems of all types. In addition, the staff includes Laura Reiter, MSW, a licensed social worker, and two advanced doctoral student trainees. The Counseling Center is available to graduate students during office hours for consultations leading to referrals. The Counseling Center is located at 135 Allen Place. Psychiatric and other referrals are also available. All communication with the counseling center staff is confidential as provided by state and federal law, and no information is disclosed without the student’s consent.
