SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT - 2008

Many students are interested in doing an internship during the summer, either in Hartford or elsewhere. You should begin by researching what it is you want to do and by finding an organization in which you can do it. The Directory of Internships indicates which organizations in our program accept summer interns – contact them directly for more information.  For opportunities outside the Hartford area, please consult the summer resources in Career Services.

Most students do summer internships for their own experience, and in order to have something on their resume. It is also possible to do an internship for credit during the summer. If you wish to get credit for a summer internship you must:

1/  Secure an internship placement and notify the Internship Office to have it approved for credit. This should be done before you leave for the summer as the deadline is June 2nd..

2/  Find a Faculty Sponsor who will be available during the summer and who agrees to supervise your academic project.  You will usually consult with the professor by phone or e-mail, and turn in your written work at the end of the summer.

3/  Pick up an Internship Contract from the Internship Office, or find it on our website. Get it filled out and signed. Turn in the ORIGINAL and one COPY to the Internship Office by June 2nd.  The form requires the signature of the person you are working for, so you will need to send it to be signed or take it with you and then send it back when signed. It must also be signed by your Faculty Sponsor, and his/her department chair.

4/  Pick up a summer registration form from the Registrar (Trinity Commons). An internship is treated as a summer course for registration purposes -- you must register and pay tuition (about $1250 per credit) at the Registrar. Late registration fees may apply after the deadline. If you register before May 9, you can be billed for the tuition fee through Student Accounts.

You will not receive credit unless you are registered with the Registrar and have submitted a completed contract to the Internship Office.

DEADLINE: JUNE 2nd,  2008

The Internship Office has limited summer hours, so you must observe this deadline. NO INTERNSHIP MAY BE REGISTERED FOR CREDIT RETROACTIVELY. You must have your forms completed and register by June 2nd.

At the end of the summer, an evaluation form will be sent to your placement organization. Your grade will be based on this evaluation and on the academic work you complete for the professor. Grades are given by the Faculty Sponsor.

Most internships are 1/2 credit or 1 credit. You may receive up to 2 credits if the internship counts towards your major. Any non-major summer internship for more than 1 credit must be approved by the Curriculum Committee before the end of classes in the spring term. See the Internship Office for special forms and deadlines.
