STUDENTS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK WILL BE CONDUCTED ON ALL APPLICANTS BEFORE INTERVIEWS ARE SCHEDULED. THEY ARE ADVISED TO DISCLOSE TO THE INTERN COORDINATOR ANY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE COURT SYSTEM.
AGENCY FUNCTION: The mission of the Connecticut Judicial Branch is to resolve disputes brought before it in a fair, timely and efficient manner.
INTERN ACTIVITIES: Most placements are in the following areas: Adult Probation (Intake Interns: monitor court proceedings, interview clients, explain conditions of probation or first offender programs, compile file information; Supervision Interns: assist probation officers in monitoring client behavior through interviews, field visits, computer tracking and community agencies.); Public Defender (assist attorneys/investigators in defense of clients by interviewing clients and attending arraignments, contacting family members/witnesses, locating social services for clients. Must be able to work 8 a.m. until the close of the court day at (usually) 5 p.m.; External Affairs (PR, community education, legislative issues affecting the Judicial Branch. Specific duties will vary according to schedule of Legislature and interests /capabilities of intern.); Juvenile placements very limited, but potentially available in Juvenile Probation, Juvenile Detention and Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. Limited placements may be available with State’s Attorney, Community Court, Jury Administration, Housing Court and in other administrative offices.
HOURS PER WEEK: 8 minimum; some placements require 2 full days.
