Important Message to the Trinity Community - November 21, 2013

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am writing to let you know that the College has temporarily suspended all activities of Kappa Kappa Gamma pending an investigation into an alleged violation of College rules forbidding pledging, hazing, and unregistered social events.  On Thursday, November 14, 2013, Campus Safety received a copy of a message that had been posted on a Hartford Police anonymous tip line indicating that the sorority was putting new members in danger.  Dean Card investigated and found enough evidence to warrant a more complete investigation of this matter, which will be handled in the normal course in compliance with the procedures set forth in the Student Handbook for such matters.

I trust the College’s judicial system will reach a fair and reasoned decision in this particular matter, but this incident serves as a reminder to all of us that hazing and unauthorized activities assimilating new members into the culture of an organization, club, or athletic team have no place at the College.  Teams found to be in violation of College rules and regulations risk having their season cancelled and their team disbanded; and clubs and other organizations found to be in violation of College rules and regulations are subject to similar penalties, up to and including prohibited status.

I urge all leaders of student organizations and teams to make every effort to ensure that no one in their group creates conditions that by force or coercion place another student in danger, interfere with academic achievement, or that violate the College’s rules and regulations.

Yours very truly,

James F. Jones, Jr.
