GREETINGS FROM THE STUDENTS
Isaac E. Goldstein '05,
Student Government Association, President
I first met the president last spring. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and I was getting out of my car in the lot behind Jarvis. Scott Reynolds and a man I didn’t recognize were approaching a car next to mine. The stranger walked up to me, extended his hand, and said, “what’s your name?” I quickly noticed one of his distinguishing features, his handshake. (turn to the president) Mr. President, you sure do have one heck of a handshake.
After my reply, he continued, “I’m the new president of the college, Jim Jones. It’s nice to meet you.” I stammered, “likewise, Mr. President,” and wondered when this forward fellow was going to let go of my hand. We chatted for a minute or two about the college and he left to catch his plane.
I spent the rest of the weekend and the beginning of the next week telling the story of my first encounter with President Jones. Every student who would listen learned of your tenacity and excitement – and of course, they all were warned about your handshake. All jesting aside, every bit of our first encounter – even your handshake - demonstrated your indispensable knack for being forward and engaging with students. Sure, your warmth and humor puts students at ease, but it is the excitement and tenacity in your greeting that makes students instantly appreciate your leadership. At this crossroads in Trinity’s history, the students of Trinity College need and appreciate the enthusiasm you bring to the table. I am confident that you and Trinity College students are a good match.
The leadership you have demonstrated since that glorious spring morning has been greatly appreciated. On behalf of the students of Trinity College, I welcome you in your new role and trust that you will enjoy a long and successful tenure at this wonderful college.
