New Muslim Chaplain Named at Trinity

Marwa Saied Aly to divide time between Trinity and Wesleyan

HARTFORD, Conn. – Marwa Saied Aly has been appointed Muslim Chaplain at Trinity College, filling the vacancy created by the departure earlier this year of Sohaib Sultan. Aly will divide her time between Trinity and Wesleyan University in Middletown.

Aly is completing her master’s degree in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Hartford Seminary. She is also getting her certification in Islamic chaplaincy and is studying under Dr. Ingrid Mattson.

Aly comes to Trinity and Wesleyan having worked as a Muslim Chaplain at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, and as an instructor of Arabic and Qur’anic recitation in community settings. She received her bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies and Philosophy from Fordham University in NY. She is a native New Yorker, although her parents are from Egypt.

Aly will serve as the adviser to the Muslim Student Associations on both campuses. She will teach Muslim students the Qur’an (the central religious text of Islam), the hadith (oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of the Islamic prophet Muhammed), and provide spiritual guidance. Aly also will serve on Trinity’s Interfaith Council, and will participate in the leadership of spiritual and religious life on campus with College Chaplain Allison Read; Lisa Kassow, the director of Hillel; and the campus’s ministers.

“Chaplain Aly will be an invaluable resource on matters of campus climate, and we are very fortunate to welcome her to campus,” said Read.

Although her schedule may be somewhat flexible, Aly will most likely be at Trinity on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday. On Tuesdays, she will be available from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. She will be available all day Thursdays and will try to accommodate those who seek appointments at other times.

To reach Aly, you can email her at Marwa.Aly@trincoll.edu.
