Trinity College Muslim Association Celebrates Islam Awareness Week

What: The Muslim Students Association of Trinity College is hosting the 3rd Annual Islam Awareness Week, March 25-28, on the theme of "Faith and Social Justice."

 

When and Where: March 25-28 on the Trinity College campus

 

Tuesday, March 25 ~ 7 p.m., Alumni Lounge  Dr. Farid Esack will speak on Islam and the Struggle for Human Rights. Esack is a visiting scholar at Harvard University, an acclaimed author whose writings are charting a new course in Islamic thought, and a human rights activist who worked alongside Nelson Mendela in creating a new post-apartheid South Africa. Esack is the author of the well acclaimed Qur'an, Liberation, and Pluralism.

 

Wednesday, March 26 ~ 4:30 p.m., Bishop Lounge  Interfaith panel discussion: Religious Perspectives on Environmental Justice, given by Trinity College's community of chaplains. In this discussion we will talk about the moral obligation to care for and protect our environment, and how we can cooperate across religious lines to meet the collective challenges facing us. 

 

Thursday, March 27 ~ 6:30 p.m., Terrace Room B  Dr. Peter Gottschalk of Wesleyan University will give a presentation on his latest book Islamophobia: Making Muslim the Enemy. In this presentation, he will counter common stereotypes and prejudices against Muslims found in Western media, and will discuss the importance of building a tolerant and pluralistic society at home and abroad.

 

Friday, March 28 ~ 2 p.m., Terrace Room C  The community is invited to observe/participate in Muslim Friday prayers led by Trinity College's own Muslim Chaplain, Sohaib Sultan. The sermon will be on Standing up for Justice as a reflection on the week's theme and programs. 

 

Friday, March 28 ~ 6:30 p.m., Rittenburg Lounge The community is invited to a multiethnic dinner from around the Muslim World as well as a picture essay on the Islamic Pilgrimage (known as the Hadj). This event will conclude Islam Awareness Week and will be a great opportunity to experience Muslim culture. Don't miss out on a food for the body, mind, and soul!
