Is Greater Hartford Ready for Regionalism?

An Examination of Economic Development and Political Governance in the Hartford Region

What:  Four experts will explore the concept of a regional system of economic development and governance in the Greater Hartford region. The panel discussion will be moderated by Tom Condon, columnist and deputy editorial page editor of The Hartford Courant.

When:   Friday, March 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. A reception will follow.

Where: The Washington Room in Mather Hall on the Trinity campus.

Background:  The Center for Urban and Global Studies, which was launched in October 2007, is sponsoring a two-year research project on the transformation of Hartford. Its purpose is to deepen Trinity’s engagement in Hartford and to enhance its contributions to the city and region.

The two-staged project will involve a broad group of Trinity and non-Trinity faculty members, as well as policy analysts, community representatives, and students. The first stage will feature discussions of and research on the critical issues facing Hartford. The second stage is expected to result in the publication of a book that will contribute to classroom and experiential learning, urban scholarship, and community development.

The first symposium, held on February 8, identified the critical issues facing Hartford in the 21st century.  The second forum is entitled, “It Takes a City-Region: Economic Development and Political Governance in Greater Hartford.”

The participants in the panel discussion include:
• Heidi Green, president of 1000 Friends of Connecticut. The title of her talk is “Restoring Prosperity – State, Regional and Municipal Growth Policies, Practices and Trends.”
• John Shemo, vice president of the MetroHartford Alliance. He will speak on “Hartford’s Place in the Global Economy.”
• Lyle Wray. executive director of the Capitol Region Council of Governments. His lecture will focus on “What Are Regions Good For? 21st Century Challenges That Fit.”
• Clyde McKee, professor of political science, Trinity College. The title of his talk is “What Can and Should Be Done for Hartford? Form, Functions, and Missed Opportunities.”

The third and final event of the Spring 2008 semester will take place on April 10 and will address the diverse ethnic and migrant communities in Hartford. Details will be forthcoming.

The panel discussion is open to the Trinity community and to the public. For more information, contact Luiselle Rivera at Luiselle.Rivera@trincoll.edu or at 860-297-5175.
