Trinity Students to be Well Represented at National Event
What: Trinity College will send more than 50 students to The University of Maryland on Friday for Power Shift 2007, the first-ever national youth summit on global warming. Sponsored primarily by the Sudent Government budget committee, Trinity will send Bryce Blum (’10), who has spearheaded the effort on campus, and classmates on a bus trip to a conference that he says will “empower students, and help them to become more environmentally conscious to use that knowledge to spread the word on campus and in whatever they do.” Blum estimates that most schools will send 10-20 students. The Student Government’s financial commitment to the event shows an increased effort to raise environmental awareness on campus as global warming has becoming a growing concern. Blum is part of a sustainable task force on campus created to help the school meet environmental standards and increase awareness of environmental issues in the wake of President Jones signing the College and University President’s Climate Commitment this summer.
Thousands of young people from across the country will hear from leaders and experts in the global warming movement with possible appearances from an invitee list that includes former Vice President Al Gore, film producer Spike Lee, Majora Carter of Sustainable South Bronx, and comedian Jon Stewart. In workshops such as "Leadership Development" and "Working with the Media,” students will also learn skills of organizing and activism from top organizers from across the country. The summit culminates on Monday with a rally on Capitol Hill.
