HARTFORD, Conn., June 1, 2007— Trinity College student Joseph Ricci, son of Valerie and John Ricci, of Springfield, MA, has been selected as one of 20 recipients to receive the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship. The national scholarship provides $2,000 immediately before entering graduate school and $30,000 while attending graduate school.
Chosen from a pool of highly selective applicants from over 100 schools invited to nominate, Ricci, a member of the Trinity class of 2008, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in ancient or Byzantine history. A Classics major, Ricci has received numerous awards and honors during his undergraduate career, including Faculty Honors, the John C. Williams Prize in Greek for his outstanding performance in his first-year Greek course, and the Raether Family Scholarship.
The Beinecke Scholarship Program was established in 1971 by the board of directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke. The board created an endowment to provide substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
