Press Release

Trinity Club of Hartford Honors Alumna Judy Dworin

Hartford, Conn., October 31, 2006—Trinity College and the Trinity Club of Hartford will honor Judy Dworin, Class of 1970 on November 9, 2006, at the club’s Annual Banquet and Person of the Year Dinner. Dworin will be recognized for her service to the College and the community.

Dworin founded the Judy Dworin Performance Project, Inc. (JDPP Inc.) in 1989 based on a commitment to the important role the arts can and do play in challenging and creating change in our universe—personal, educational, and global. Through her artistic vision, the Project provides cutting-edge performance through the Judy Dworin Performance Ensemble (JDPE), a ground-breaking educational residency program of long standing, Moving Matters!, co-directed with Associate Artistic Director Kathy Borteck Gersten. Moving Matters! has brought long-term collaborative residencies to diverse educational communities including Parkville Community  School, in Hartford, entering its tenth year, and York Correctional Institution for women, the program's most recent venue. She has also taught residencies in Bulgaria and Taiwan as well as throughout New England.

She is on the master teaching roster for the State of Connecticut and is the recipient of the Distinguished Advocate for the Arts Award in 1998, the Governor's Arts Award in 1999, the Connecticut Dance Alliance Award for Distinguished Service in 2006, and the Charter Oak Vision Award for Arts and Education in 2006, among others.

Dworin’s commitment to education has also had a thirty-five-year history at Trinity College, where she founded the Dance Program, co-founded the Trinity/La MaMa New York City Semester in the Performing Arts, and presently chairs the Department of Theater and Dance. Judy's work in performance and teaching is informed by her belief in the wisdom of the body and its spontaneous and creative expression as a foundational element to our growth and development. She lives in Bloomfield with her husband, lighting designer Blu.
