Program is sponsored by Arthur Vining Davis Institute for Urban and Global Studies
HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College President James F. Jones, Jr., is among the luminaries who will participate in the May 27 kickoff of the summer fellowship program sponsored by the Arthur Vining Davis Institute for Urban and Global Studies. Nineteen students have been selected as research or community fellows for the 10-week program, each having been assigned a faculty sponsor.
In addition to President Jones, officials who will take part in the “Welcome Day” festivities include Dean of Faculty Rena Fraden; Tara Parrish of Hartford Areas Rally Together (HART); and Hartford City Council members rJo Winch and Luis Cotto. The event will be at 10:15 a.m. in McCook Auditorium and will be followed by lunch in the Life Sciences Center.
The overall goal of the Arthur Vining Davis Summer Institute in Urban and Global Studies is to integrate Trinity’s urban and global learning into its undergraduate curriculum. The program also is intended to help students develop skills that will serve them in the classroom; engage them in the urban environment of Hartford; link Hartford with cities throughout the world; and prepare the students to study abroad should they choose to do so.
Students from all socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to participate in Trinity’s urban and global initiatives. Each Davis Fellow will receive a $3,500 stipend and housing at Trinity for 10 weeks. The students also will attend weekly lectures and panel discussions.
Ten of the students are research fellows; nine are community fellows. The research fellows work with faculty mentors on projects that focus on urban and/or global issues that will benefit both the student and the faculty member. Community fellows can do outreach or complete a community-based project.
