Tearing Down Social Stereotypes at Trinity

Inter-Social Council to sponsor Campus-Wide Block Party

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Inter-Social Council of Students, which was formed last year in the wake of some racist and sexist incidents on campus, is sponsoring its first-ever block party on Thursday, May 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Vernon Street.

The organization, which has been meeting weekly throughout the academic year and is composed of most of the fraternities, sororities and cultural houses on campus, has as its objective the promotion of tolerance and the shattering racial and ethnic stereotypes.

“We’re a group of organizations who have tried to improve the social atmosphere on campus,” said Melissa Litwack, ’10. “This is one last hurrah for the end of the year to bring the entire Trinity community together. We’ve had a lot of support from the dean of students’ office.”

The block party will be a barbeque with food provided by Chartwell’s, which will be closing the Mather dining hall during the event. There will also be carnival-type activities, a jousting tournament, dancing and music provided by a cappella groups, Hip Hop performers and other bands. Trinity T-shirts will be available.

One of the founders of the group, Alyssa Simpson, ’10, said the Inter-Social Council was formed in the fall of 2007 and consists of about 15 to 20 Greek and cultural houses. “It was created to combat the stigmas that we felt existed on campus,” she said. Other students who were active in creating the group and instrumental in pulling together the block party include Chauncey Kerr, ’09, and Caroline Carpenter, ’08.

“There will be tons of food,” said Simpson. “We’re hoping for a huge turnout.”
