Trinity Campus Unites for Relay for Life

Lisa Nestor, Chemistry Professor and Cancer Victim to be Remembered

What: The Trinity College Student Planning Committee is dedicating this year's third annual Relay for Life to the memory of Trinity Chemistry professor, Lisa Nestor, who lost her battle with lung cancer in the summer of 2007.  Nestor was known as a caring and compassionate professor who was genuinely interested in the lives of her students. She was a beloved professor, mentor, friend, wife, stepmother, daughter, sister, and aunt.

President James F. Jones, Jr. will speak at this year’s opening ceremonies and music professor Eric Galm and his Samba Ensemble will officially kick off the event by leading a group of cancer survivors around the track for the first lap.  Jim Nestor, husband of Lisa Nestor, will be formally recognized for his role as a caregiver and student members of AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and TCS (Trinity Chemical Society) will share some of their memories of her.  The ceremony will also feature a slideshow complete with names, pictures, and messages to loved ones who have lost, are still fighting, or won their battle with cancer.

Throughout the entire 18-hour event, at least one member from each of the 40+ registered teams will be walking around the track at all times.  Relay teams consist of various clubs, Greek organizations, athletic teams, religious groups, residence halls, and groups of friends. Participants will be treated to a variety of entertainment options. In addition, more than 30 local restaurants will donate food and beverages to the event, including Chartwells.
In two years, the event has raised nearly $150,000 for the America Cancer Society.  The first Relay, which took place in 2006, was held in memory of beloved English professor Fred Pfeil.
